At an evening Mass on Sunday, March 27, 2011, our confrère, Dom Benedict Reide, was ordained to the diaconate by His Excellency, the Most Reverend Franz Scharl, auxiliary bishop of Vienna. Many of the Juniors returned to the Stift to attend the ordination.
The Provost has assigned Dom Benedict to St Paul’s, our parish in Bergen, Norway, where he shall exercise his diaconate. Please remember Dom Benedict in your prayers as he makes his way to priestly ordination on the feast of the Archangels, September 29, 2011.
With Dom Benedict’s ordination, the Stift now has three transitional deacons. However, this number will soon be reduced to one when Dom Maximilian and Dom Alipius are ordained to the priesthood on May 14, 2011 by His Excellency, the Most Reverend, Bernt Markus Eidsvig, the bishop of Oslo; Bishop Markus had served as Novice Master for both of the ordinandi. Please remember all of them in your prayer during these final weeks before their ordination.
Recently, Dom Elias, Dom Daniel and Dom Gabriel conducted Lenten parish missions at St. Patrick and St. Rocco, the two parishes in which the Canons will soon be serving. The program of events was well attended, and there is much excitement about the impending arrival of the Canons. The five day mission began with the preaching of all the weekend Masses at the two parishes as well as three additional days of morning and evening sessions that included spiritual talks, songs, devotions, the liturgy of the hours, a veneration of the relic of the True Cross and confessions.
The Canons shall reside at the Canonry of St. Leopold, which will be situated on the grounds of St. Patrick. The Provost has appointed Dom Daniel as the first local superior of the community. Dom Elias and Dom Bruno will join Dom Daniel.
The official date for the starting of pastoral care for St. Patrick and St. Rocco, Glen Cove, New York, is June 22, 2011.
